The Portuguese capital has been chosen as a transatlantic stopover for the prestigious international regatta Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, regarded as the Around the World of Sailing. In the circumnavigating route of this competition, Lisbon will be the first European port to host the best yachtsmen in the world and most experienced international crews, after their Atlantic Ocean crossing.

Arriving from Miami, Florida, the crews will be awaited at Pedrouços Docks, just outside Lisbon, on May 31 to 10, from where they will head off for Lorient, in France, as part of the 8th leg of this event.

By road or by rail, Portugal is yours to discover

©António Sá
Take the train and discover Portugal at your own pace. Or, drive and you can pick the country’s fabulous landscapes to discover. Just imagine riding on a steam train that’s been running for over a hundred years!

Douro by car: Layered landscapes of vines, historic peaceful towns and castles days past are all part of your drive along the Douro River Valley. You’ll be traveling up hill and down dale, along narrow, winding roads. But you’ll find that it is well worth the effort when you discover everything that the Douro has to offer you.

Follow the main road, beginning in Peso da Régua and driving across the hills above the Douro. From the viewpoint of São Leonardo, you can see the river valley and the mountains of the Serra do Marão, all in just one frame. At Casal de Loivos, you find a naturally formed balcony overlooking Pinhão and the open, curved valley of the River Douro.

Rest for the night in an ancient manor-house and wake up to the beautiful view. Cross over the River Tua, a tributary of the Douro, visit Torre de Moncorvo and continue on to a very special part of the Douro, Barca d’Alva. One of the best Portuguese wines is produced here.

Very close by is the Foz Coa Archaeological Park, an outdoor gallery of prehistoric rock art, which has been classified as World Heritage. You have almost reached the far end of Portugal.

Douro by train: Relive the early 20th Century pastime of exploring the Douro River Valley by rail on CP. The real stars of a historic train ride through the Douro River Valley are the carriages and the steam and diesel locomotives that pull them. The railway line from Porto to Pocinho is a remarkable feat of engineering.

Lisbon Festivities 2012: Starts tomorrow!

©EGEAC
From May 31 to June 30, Lisbon goes to the street to celebrate the Popular Saints festival.

With a whiff of summer in the air, the Festivities of Lisbon offer a welter of entertainment activities that will invade Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods, luring lure thousands of people into the streets.

Santo António - Lisbon’s patron saint - overseas the city’s festivities that reach their highpoint on the evening of June 12, with a procession of popular marches through the Avenida da Liberdade. On the afternoon of June 13, a procession in homage to the popular Saint - who is believed to foster marriages - winds its way through the streets around the Sé cathedral and provides a special religious flavour to the festivities.

©EGEAC
Evenings are animated by traditional festivities in Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods - from Castelo to Mouraria, Graça, Alfama, Ajuda and the Bairro Alto - with lots of music and dance to the rhythm of popular songs. Decorated with coloured globes and garlands, the city’s streets are invaded by the smell of roasted sardines and sweet basil accompanied by paper carnations and paintings that allude to Santo António.

June is the main month of these festivities, but they also extend throughout the summer, including a wide variety of events such as fado, jazz and other musical performances, fado in the city’s trams, cinema and theatre festivals, sports events and exhibitions.

Festas de Lisboa opening show: Firebirds starts off Festas de Lisboa’12 by recreating an air race with six daring pilots and their bizarre flying machines. This theatrical street performance will draw a route through the center of the city, accompanied by the live music of the French band Fanfare le Snob. Created by the Titanick Theatre, Firebirds is inspired by Humanity´s innate characteristic of overcoming its limitations, in the constant search for new goals and challenges and represents a wild fight to get the best position upon arrival. In a tribute to the Lusitanian Heritage, the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the values associated with the historical legacy of Portugal, the end of the show is marked by a Fado interpretation by the band Frei fado d’El Rei, with lirycs by the Portuguese writer valter hugo mãe.

ASP 6-Star Estoril Surf Women’s Pro confirmed in 2012!

©ASPEurope -Courtney Conlogue (USA), Winner of Last Year's event in Estoril
The ASP Europe 6-Star Estoril Surf Women’s Pro returns in 2012 with a change in dates to September for a better swell window in Praia da Bafureira, Cascais – Portugal.

The Portuguese event has been a regular stop on the European leg of the ASP World Tour since 2008 and became increasingly popular to many of the World’s best women surfers.

Up until last year, the event used to run in June, but the decision was taken in 2012 to move the Estoril Surf Women’s Pro to September 21-23, to coincide with a better wind and swell window on the Portuguese coast. Forecast analytics show that September is the perfect time of year to run the event with a swell consistency of 78% and an average size of 6Ft. Winds are also very favorable with an offshore North-East dominancy throughout the early Autumn season.

The ASP 6-Star Estoril Surf Women’s Pro will run from September 21-23 at Praia da Bafureira, Cascais – Portugal.
